Special Education- Career Growth And Requirements
Career growth
The growing realization that children with special needs also require to be treated as normal and hence need to be equipped with necessary skill sets and education has led to special attention being paid to the sector in recent times. The special education sector is just opening up in India. Demand is high and
well qualified persons less in number. The requirements are expected to grow in the years to come.
Remuneration
The requirements in the field have led to increased level of remuneration being offered in the field.
In any case, the total compensation package depends on factors such as level of professional
qualification and experience in the area, nature of work (work with visually/mentally challenged
students etc) and nature and type of organization employed in (private sector/public sector etc.).
With a recognized postgraduate degree in the area of specialization, educators can expect to
start with a salary of Rs. 12000/- or more per month which can rise very soon with experience.
Diversification
Special educators can choose to diversify into mainstream education & training. The paramedical
sector is also an option. The following avenues are available within the paramedical sector:
- Physical Therapy (or Physiotherapy)
- Occupational Therapy
- Orthotic Engineering & Technology
- Prosthetic Engineering & Technology
- Speech Therapy & Audiology
Skill Set Required
High degrees of patience, concentration, emotional stability, physical fitness, persistence, team player,
excellent listening & communication skills
and willing to work long and arduous hours are the pre requisites to be successful in the area.
For educators working with mentally challenged students
Alertness, objectivity, warm personality and physical stamina.
For educators working with physically challenged students
Physical stamina and knowledge of physiotherapy.
For educators working with blind students
Strong, articulate voice, good language skills, vision and knowledge of Braille.
For educators working with deaf and dumb students
Knowledge of sign language and positive body language.
A career in the filed of special education is also special for those who take a plunge. It may not be as
financially exciting as may be an MBA or a Chartered Accountancy. But the joy of seeing a smile on the
face of a child gives immense mental satisfaction and peace of mind. The career is an ideal choice for
those who want to make a difference to the lives of little children whose needs are different but who
also want to lead as normal life as possible. It is this objective that all special educators have to
try to fulfill so that
their wards can lead a normal and productive life in spite of their seemingly different conditions.
